My Song of Joy

Consider the singer

He seeks to find a melody all of his own

To bring him ecstasy –

And once in a lifetime

That singer hears his special tune –

It is his song

He’ll sing it endlessly

And it will ever be his song of joy

And a thousand symphonies will play it endlessly

In joyous harmony,

For you see

It is his song of joy.

Consider the lover

He seeks to find a lady

All of his own –

A gift from God above –

And once under a canopy

He finds the love he’s waited for

She brings him love

His song of love and joy.

And she will ever be

His song of joy

Side by side they’ll walk for aye

In glorious harmony

And God-like unity,

For you see

She is his song of joy.

And I want you to be my song of joy

None but God will ever know

the joy you bring to me

I’ll play you endlessly, for you see

You’re my song

My only song

Be my song of joy.

Don wrote this song for a British literature project our senior year of college. I heard it and fell in love with the tune. When I began preparing for my proposal to Carol, Don and I discussed it, and I decided to write words fitting the proposal. Carol’s name means “Song of Joy,” so the metaphor flowed quite well. Ask me sometime and I’ll tell you the story of that wonderful night, when the song was performed for the first time before an audience of one – my song of joy – December 4th, 1982.
